Contact info, links, references

Do

  • Focus on key contributions — not exhaustive details
  • Use simple language accessible to a multidisciplinary audience
  • Limit to 6–8 bullet points per slide
  • Prefer visuals (charts, diagrams) over walls of text
  • Use high-resolution figures and explain every axis and legend
  • Highlight novelty and practical implications early
  • Rehearse to your target time, then trim

Don't

  • Read directly from your slides
  • Overcrowd a slide with text
  • Include every detail from the paper
  • Use low-resolution images or screenshots
  • Exceed the time limit — the chair will cut you off

Visual design

  • – Title slides: 40–44pt, bold
  • – Section titles: 28–32pt, bold
  • – Body text: 22–24pt, regular
  • – Captions / footnotes: 16–18pt
  • – Sans-serif fonts only (Readex Pro, Space Grotesk, Arial, Helvetica)
  • – High-resolution images (≥ 150 DPI)
  • – Text in figures must be readable from the back of the room
  • – Consistent colour coding across all charts

Delivery tips

  • – Practice the full talk at least three times before the session
  • – Arrive 15 minutes early to test the projector and audio
  • – Speak clearly and at a moderate pace; pause after key points
  • – Make eye contact with the audience, not the screen
  • – Use a laser pointer or on-screen cursor for emphasis
  • – Have a one-page handout or QR code linking to the paper

Handling Q&A

  • – Listen carefully — repeat the question for the audience
  • – Answer concisely and stay on topic
  • – It is fine to say “I don't know — let me follow up by email”
  • – Thank the questioner after each response
